What is the Difference Between Wire Rope and Steel Strand?cid=4

As we all know, steel wire ropes and steel strands are very similar in terms of name and appearance. Although they are both twisted from multiple strands of steel wire, their uses are quite different.

1. Wire rope:

It consists of steel wire, rope core and grease. A steel wire rope is first twisted into strands from multiple layers of steel wire, and then a certain number of strands are twisted into a spiral rope with the rope core as the center. In material handling machinery, it is used for lifting, pulling, tightening and carrying. The steel wire rope has high strength, light weight, stable operation, not easy to break suddenly, and reliable operation. The characteristics of steel wire rope are as follows:

① It has a large load-carrying safety factor and is safe and reliable to use.

② It is light in weight and easy to carry and transport.

③ Able to withstand a variety of loads and variable loads.

④ Under high-speed working conditions, it has good wear resistance, shock resistance and good operating stability.

⑤ It has good corrosion resistance and can work normally in harsh environments with various harmful media.

2. Steel strand:

Steel strand is a steel product composed of multiple steel wires. The surface of the carbon steel can be added with galvanized layer, zinc-aluminum alloy layer, aluminum-clad layer, copper-plated layer, epoxy resin coating, etc. as needed. Industrial steel strands are important hardware used in concrete structures for reinforcement and safety.

There are 7 types of industrial steel strand. Although almost all industrial stranded wire is made of steel, there are several different types of industrial stranded wire created for different applications. They include:

① Unbonded steel strand;

② Bonded steel strand;

③ Spiral ribbed steel strand, etc.

The characteristics of steel strand are as follows:

① Wear resistance: Since steel strand is woven from multiple steel wires and has high surface hardness, its wear resistance is better than other materials under the same weight;

② High strength: Because the steel strand is made of multiple steel wires, it can withstand the lifting and transportation of a large number of heavy objects;

③ Corrosion resistance: The outside of the steel strand is generally treated with galvanizing or other methods, which can effectively prevent the steel strand from being oxidized and corroded during use;

3. The difference between them:

Although steel wire ropes and steel strands are both twisted from multiple strands of steel wire, their differences are quite obvious. Mainly reflected in the following aspects:

1. Different twisting methods. Steel wire ropes are made of multiple strands of steel wire twisted in the same direction or in opposite directions, while steel strands are made of multiple strands of steel wires twisted crosswise into rhombus strands.

2. Different usage occasions. Steel wire ropes are mainly used in hoisting, traction, winches, wire rope anchoring and other occasions, while steel strands are mainly used in wire and cable products.

3. Different processing techniques. As a load-bearing component, steel wire ropes require surface treatment, drawing and other processes, while steel strands only need to be shaped and can be directly used in wires and cables.

To sum up, although steel wire rope and steel strand have similarities, they are actually two different products, and there are obvious differences in their application situations and usage methods.
